This weekend was the celebration of the Chinese New Year (of the Horse), which meant that Macau would be invaded by a massive amount of people throughout these days. Now, you see, this city is already chaotic too walk around in throughout the year. Chinese New Year is ten times worse than the can of sardines from hell. People walking in the slowest speed possible, unable to walk in a front line, plus people walking on the opposite direction, who believe you are invisible. I've come close to a nervous breakdown several times, while attempting to walk the busy streets of Macau.
This year, to avoid the motherload of psychological meltdowns, I decided to go to the places where I'd least expect to find tourists and gamblers.
1. Jardim de Camões // Camões Garden
Score.
We then went for a little apéritif on the other side of the city.
To be honest, Chinese New Year isn't all that bad. Married, older people, have the tradition of giving out money in little red envelopes (lai-si) too younger people. It's considerer to be "lucky money", for both the giver and the receiver.
2. Botticelli's Venus Exhibition at the MGM Hotel
Okay, so we actually went to a casino hotel. But, although the hotel and the casino were in fact, full, as we expected, the exhibition was empty.
And, although the only original work is the Venus (below), it was an afternoon well spent.
And here is the original Venus:
We were starving by the end of the day. So, we went for a little afternoon tea. Couldn't have ended the CNY in a better way.
